She is remembered for surviving wartime danger, helping run wire through a narrow pipe during airfield construction, and bringing comfort to wounded soldiers.
Today, Smoky is honored with a memorial at Cleveland Metroparks, which describes her as a Yorkshire Terrier who aided troops during WWII and later became the world’s first therapy dog on record.
