When What Is Lost Is Found Within

“I never thought I had to say goodbye, because how soon is soon when you never want to say goodbye?”

That line came to me like the beginning of a song, but maybe it is more than that. Maybe it is the honest place grief starts to heal.

Because when you love someone deeply, whether it is a person, a horse, a dog, a cat, or a little soul that walked beside you for only a season, goodbye never feels like something you are ready for. It does not matter how much time you had. It does not matter if you knew it was coming. Soon is always too soon when love is still reaching out its hands.

It is funny how emotions work.

Love is such a blessing because it gives us something so real, so present, so tangible. A warm body beside us. A face we know by heart. A sound in the house. A routine. A greeting. A look. A way of being loved that belongs only to them.

And then, when that presence is no longer there to hold, the emptiness feels louder than anything.

But before the loss, before the silence, before the ache, we were already holding them somewhere deeper than our hands.

We held them in our hearts.

The memories, the moments, the laughter, the tears, the ordinary days we did not know would one day become sacred. The little habits. The way they looked at us. The comfort they gave without saying a word. The way their presence became part of the rhythm of our lives.

It may sound cliché to say that love lives on, but sometimes the simplest truths are the ones grief teaches us best.

In the beginning, grief feels like pain. Sharp, heavy, unfair pain. It can feel like a room you do not know how to leave. It can feel like the absence is bigger than the love ever was.

    But over time, grief changes.

It does not mean we stop missing them. It does not mean the love becomes smaller. It means the hurt begins to transform. What once felt like only heartbreak slowly becomes a woven part of who we are.

Their love becomes part of our gentleness.

Their memory becomes part of our strength.

Their absence teaches us how deeply we were able to love.

And maybe that is why the loss of a beloved pet can touch places in us that words cannot fully explain. Because animals love in a way that feels close to heaven. They do not ask us to perform. They do not care how broken we feel. They simply stay near. They remind us that love can be quiet, loyal, patient, forgiving, and pure.

A horse can carry more than a rider.

A dog can guard more than a home.

A cat can comfort more than a room.

And a tiny little soul like Tuki can leave pawprints across an entire lifetime.

I believe we were created to love. To help. To create. To open our hearts to something higher than ourselves. To God, who leads us through Jesus, and who understands loss in a way we sometimes forget.

The very act of God giving His Son to a damaged world is the moment we are reminded that love is not small. Love is costly. Love is eternal. Love suffers, but it also redeems.

And when we lose someone precious, whether they had hands, paws, hooves, or wings, we begin to understand that love does not disappear just because we can no longer touch it.

    It moves inward…

    It becomes memory.

    It becomes tenderness.

It becomes the reason we notice beauty more carefully.

It becomes the reason we hold others a little closer.

It becomes part of every fiber of our existence.

So if you are grieving today, whether the loss is fresh or years behind you, please know this:

You are not weak because it still hurts.

You are not stuck because you still remember.

You are not broken because love left a mark.

And if you step back into the rhythm of normal days, it’s not because you are forgetting, it’s because you carry more strength than you know.

That ache is proof that something real lived there. Something beautiful. Something given. Something that helped shape who you are.

And one day, the grief may not feel like only pain.

One day, it may feel like gratitude with tears still attached.

One day, you may realize that goodbye was never the end of the love.

It was only the moment love learned how to live inside you.
