Smoky was found in the New Guinea jungle and became the companion of Corporal William A. Wynne. She weighed only about four pounds, yet her story became enormous. She is remembered for surviving wartime danger, helping run wire through a narrow pipe during airfield construction, and bringing comfort to wounded soldiers.

Today, Smoky is honored with a memorial at Cleveland Metroparks, which describes her as a Yorkshire Terrier who aided troops during WWII and later became the world’s first therapy dog on record.

Her story is remarkable, but it also feels deeply familiar to Yorkie lovers.
